Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, (presently Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic event. Bela Karalyi came across Comaneci at the age of six. Comaneci would go on to be Romania's gymnastics coach. Her first competition was at the national junior championships in 1969 and finished 13th. She took the title in 1970. At her first international event in 1972, a pre-Olympic junior meet for the communist-bloc countries she was awarded three gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1974 she was all-around junior champion. The athlete won four golds and one silver medals at her first international competition for seniors, held in 1975. It was the first time she had competed as an adult. The first female to do the reverse double salo of the parallel bar that was uneven after winning the American Cup, New York City 1976. Carol ventured into the entertainment industry during her teenage years. Her first professional gig was figure skating alongside Nina Wayne, her younger sister in one of the touring entertainment shows Ice Capades. Ice Capades featured performances of skaters ice skating with actors.
